PESHAWAR: The traders have rejected the committees constituted by the Federal Board of Revenue for their registration under the sales tax plan and urged the government to give them a reasonable time for mediation to ensure tax collection.

“We submitted the lists of traders’ representatives to the FBR but only two of them, including Shaukat Ali and Mujeebur Rehman, were inducted in the FBR committees,” central leader of Anjuma-i-Tajiran Haji Afzal told Dawn on Thursday.

However, commissioner (inland revenue) Tariq Arbab said in a statement that the market committees had been constituted and empowered to decide the registration of traders under sales tax.

During a meeting with the representatives of traders here at Tax House, Mr Arbab said the committees were formed in light of agreement inked between FBR and the central body of traders and that the committees would resolve the disputes related to sales tax registration of shops covering an area of one thousand square feet.

The commissioner sought the traders’ cooperation to widen the tax net and informed the delegation that the government had extended date for submitting income tax returns until Jan 31.
