SWABI: An Adult Literacy Centre has been established in the Swabi judicial lock-up for imparting education to the prisoners.
Officials said here on Thursday that the centre had been set up under a MoU inked between the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Prisons Department and a non-governmental organisation.
Briefing mediapersons, deputy superintendent of the lockup Mohammad Salman Khan said that the initiative was aimed at imparting education to the prisoners, enabling them to read, write and understand the Urdu language.
He said that this would encourage them to give education to their children and become peaceful citizens.
The members of the welfare body met with prisoners in the judicial lock-up and motivated them to participate in the leaning process.
Wahid Hassan Shah, who led the welfare body’s delegation, said that they distributed books among the prisoners selected for making a class who would get regular education at the judicial lock-up.
“There would be daily two-hour class for the selected prisoners,” he said.
TWO SHOT DEAD: Unidentified assailants shot dead a man and his wife in Topi city here on Thursday.
Police said that the couple belonged to Sheringal area of Upper Dir district.
SHO Shahzad Khan said that the two were targeted from a close range.
He said that the police had recovered several empty rounds from the spot.
The motive behind the incident could not be ascertained.
The bodies were shifted to the tehsil headquarters hospital, Topi, for postmortem and later handed over to the relatives. The police have registered the case.
Meanwhile, five passengers were injured when an autorickshaw and pickup van collided near Bamkhel on Swabi-Topi road on Thursday, said police.
The cause of the mishap was stated to be speeding by the rickshaw. The injured were taken to Bacha Khan Hospital Complex.
