SIALKOT, Aug 22: At least five people were killed in poll-related violence in the district before and after Aug 18. DPO Usama Mumtaz Raja told journalists here on Monday that in Baqarpur-Motra village, Daska tehsil, a general councillor candidate Sher Muhammad was killed by his rival group during his election campaign on Aug 10. Similarly, during the polling on Aug 18, a polling agent Muhammad Afzal was shot dead by his rival political group in Seokey-Motra village polling station, Mr Raja said.

In Pasrur tehsil, a local politician Muhammad Fiaz was shot dead allegedly by Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly Member Chaudhry Maqbool Gujjar in Saddar village on polling day, he added.

A newly-elected UC Nazim Malik Muhammad Asif’s mother was shot dead by some armed persons over a political row in Sialkot Cantt a day after the LB polls.

The DPO further said one Muhammad Iqbal was tortured to death over an election dispute in Sialkot Cantt’s suburban area on Aug 19.

The police also registered three cases of murder attempts, four of firing and five cases of injuring people during the election campaign and polling in the district.
