Over 100 held in Sheikhupura

SHEIKHUPURA, Aug 25: More than 100 people were arrested in Sheikhupura and Nankana Sahib districts for violating the election code of conduct on Thursday. In Syedwala, some 50 people were arrested for hooliganism and resorting to aerial firing, 20 in UC-45, Dhamke, on charges of creating disturbance outside a polling station, over 18 in Jandiala Sher Khan and Jhabran union councils, 13 in Chapha Minara, Ghazi Minara and other localities, and eight in UC-74, Herdave.

Meanwhile, two people were killed and many others injured in election-related incidents despite tight security measures taken by the administration to check any untoward incident in both districts.

A woman, Mukhtaran Bibi, was killed in firing by some unidentified people in UC-21, Muridke.

Ameer Ali was killed and four others injured when two rival groups exchanged fire in UC-38, Mission Kalar, Ferozewala tehsil, where Malik Ahmad Khan Awan and Mirza Shahid were contesting for the slot of nazim.

Scores of people blocked traffic on the GT Road after the killing of Mukhtaran Bibi.

Police, district returning officer Allah Bakhsh Ranjah, DCO Zafar Iqbal, DPO Syed Ibn-i-Husain and DSP traffic Wazir Ali Dogar held talks with the protesters and got restored traffic after some two hours.

Dozens of people sustained bullet injuries in separate incidents in Jhamke, Jandiala Sher Khan, Jhabran Mandi, UC-73 Bhadro and UC-51 Ganishpur in Nankana district.

In UC-21, Muridke tehsil, two people were shot at by some unidentified assailants while sitting outside a polling booth.

In UC-93, Kot Sondha, Farooqabad, one Sharif sustained critical bullet wounds when his political rival opened fire on him.

In UC-1, Bhikhi, a candidate for nazim, Rehan Khan, was beaten up allegedly by his rival candidate and accomplices.

Meanwhile, the turnout was very poor in both districts. According to a survey, it was about 30 per cent to 35 per cent.
