KARACHI, Aug 25: Pakistan on Thursday announced a seven-member boxing squad which includes pugilists who recently fared badly for the Asian championship to be organized by Vietnam.
Among the seven are featherweight Meherullah and light-welterweight Asghar Ali Shah who have returned couple of days ago from Glasgow, Scotland, after crashing out of the Commonwealth championship pre-quarterfinals.
Interestingly, the pair had won the gold at Commonwealth contest in 2003 in Malaysia, while Asghar was silver medallist at last year’s Asian championship in Philippines.
Pakistan had won 10 gold medals at last years’ SAF Games in Islamabad, while India could manage to clinch one gold medal. Surprisingly, India won four gold, three silver and two bronze medals in Glasgow, while Pakistan returned empty-handed.
Other members for Vietnam competition are, flyweight Noman Kareem who will defend his title, bantamweight Abid Khan, middleweight Ejaz Mahmood, heavyweight Shaukat Ali and super-heavyweight Mir Wais.
Habibullah Jaffery has been appointed manager, Mohammad Tariq will be coach and Naimat Ali Changezi will be referee-judge.
