CHAKWAL, Aug 27: Two dissent factions of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML), Sardar group and General group, bagged 42 out of 68 seats for the slots of union council nazims, unofficial results and independent sources told Dawn. Opposition PPP and PML-N parties-backed candidates, which contested election under the banner of Saleem Iqbal group and United Front, took 24 seats whereas two seats went to independent candidates.

Sardar group, led by the former district nazim Sardar Ghulam Abbas, has come up with 28 union nazims to its side while the General group, led by the PML senior vice-president Lt-Gen (retired) Majeed Malik, managed to bag 14 UC nazims in the district.

In tehsil Talagang PML-N and PPP alliance got elected 15 union council nazims under the banner of former tehsil nazim’s Saleem Iqbal group.

In Chakwal and Kalar Kahar tehsils the opposition-supported candidates under the banner of United Front took 9 seats.

However, in Choa Saidan Shah tehsil the opposition failed to show their presence.

PML-N sweeps in Murree: PML-N backed candidates won 10 seats of nazims out of total 15 in the second phase of local government elections in Murree tehsil, reports our correspondent from Murree.

The candidates supported by ruling PML stood second by winning three seats, followed by those backed by Pakistan People’s Party and Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal securing one seat each.

According to results, the successful candidates were: Haroon Mehfooz (PML-N) in Murree City UC, Haji Irshad (PML-N) in Musiari UC, Haq Nawaz (PML-N) in Phagwari UC, Arshad Abbasi (PML-N) in Potha UC, Talat Abbasi (PML-N) in Sehr Bagla UC, Abid Abbasi (MMA) in Darya Gali UC, Ishtiaq Abbasi (PML) in Deval Sharif UC, Raja Shabbir (PML-N) in Charihan UC, Irum Satti (PPP) in Gehl UC, Raja Khalil (PML-N and PML) in Ghora Gali UC, Salim Satti (PML and PPP) in Bann UC, Zahoor Abbasi (PML-N) in Angoori UC, Arshad Nawaz Abbasi (PML-N) in Numble UC, Shaukat Mehrban (PML-N) in Tret UC, and Majeed Abbasi (PML) in Rawat UC.

WOMAN SHOT DEAD: A woman was shot dead by her relative at Nirala village in Darya Gali union council.

Sources said Imran, one of the relatives of the deceased, had asked the woman’s family not to cast their votes against the candidate supported by him. But the family refused, infuriating the alleged killer.

On the polling day, Zaib, brother of the woman, was intercepted by three persons outside his house. The three men started quarrelling with Zaib on which his sister, Zarya, came out of the house. Later, Imran opened fire, killing Zarya on the spot and injuring Zaib.
