KARACHI: A two-member team of the paeds cardiac surgery department at the National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Sukkur, on Thursday successfully performed the open-heart surgery procedure on a five-year-old child.

The team comprising head of the department Dr Sohail Khan Bangash and surgeon Mohammad Iqbal with the assistance of anaesthesiologist Dr Amin Khuwaja undertook the surgery on the child at the Sukkur NICVD free of cost.

The surgeons said that the patient’s condition was now stable.

Congratulating the surgeons, NICVD executive director Prof Nadeem Qamar described it as “a huge achievement” on the part of the Sukkur NICVD, and observed that major cardiac surgeries used to be performed only in major cities.

“With the initiation of cardiac surgeries at Sukkur, we will be able to provide comprehensive cardiology care to paeds patients in this city,” he said.

He noted that the Sukkur NICVD being a 300-bed specialised health facility, had already performed more than 650 cardiac surgeries on adult patients within a short span of time since its establishment.
