HYDERABAD, Aug 31: Preliminary findings of an inquiry into the death of Kanwal, an Indian national, has held negligence of night duty staff of Darul Aman as the main cause of the death.

The inquiry was conducted by EDO revenue Abdul Sattar under the directives of DCO Mohammad Hussain Syed.

Kanwal died in the civil hospital on August 14 after she was admitted there on August 13 by the Darul Aman in-charge when she suffered injuries under mysterious circumstances.

She was in her early 20s and had been sent to Darul Aman from Nawabshah after she had recorded her statement before a judicial magistrate.

She had arrived in Karachi from New Delhi. She was also expecting a child.

The inquiry officer is said to have noted that night watchwoman, Rukhsana, and maid Aziz Bano had tried to hush-up the matter by not disclosing the factual position of how the girl suffered injuries and told the in-charge that she had fallen in bathroom.

The girl had fallen while she was trying to escape from Darul Aman after finding an opportunity to reach the rooftop.

The officer noted that the deceased was not given any first aid because the incident took place at around 2:30am while Darul Aman in-charge was called at around 6am to shift her to hospital.

The matron of Darul Aman was on leave while the door for the upper storey was not locked by the staff because of the Independence Day celebrations whereas the door of the roof was also found open.

The officer informed the DCO that high-ups in the district government were also not informed about the incident and the Darul Aman administration did not get autopsy conducted and handed the body over to Edhi volunteers who subsequently informed Qasimabad police before burial and the matter came to the fore.

He called for ascertaining facts how an Indian national woman had landed in Darul Aman and whether the concerned civil agency had checked her particulars.
