Comments sought on Gujranwala division

GUJRANWALA, Sept 2: Lahore High Court Chief Justice Iftikhar Hussain Chaudhry on Friday issued a notice to the Punjab government for submitting parawise comments till Sept 15 on the division of Gujranwala city and Sadar tehsils into four towns.

The LHC chief justice issued the notice on a writ petition filed by former MPA and Gujranwala Bachao Tehrik convener S.A Hameed and others.

Counsel for petitioners Syed Zafer Ali Shah argued that the Punjab government notification regarding the division of city and Sadar tehsils was a clear violation of the Punjab Local Government Ordinance (Articles 9, 10, 11).

He further argued that members of these councils or people had not passed any resolution in this connection while the government had divided city and Sadar tehsils into four towns without seeking any objection which was unlawful.

The counsel apprehended that the development process of the city would be badly affected and urged the court to declare the government’s notification illegal
