Five-wicket Najaf destroys Attock

ISLAMABAD, Sept 12: Paceman Najaf Shah wrecked Attock with an impressive haul of 5-23 as Rawalpindi completed a 173-run victory in the PCB Inter-district senior cricket championship match at the Army ground on Monday.

Attock, who were 65-5 when play began on the second and final day could not cope with Najaf who ran through their batting with some accurate bowling as they crashed to 93 all out in 36.5 overs replying to Rawalpindi’s 266. Sohail Tanvir also did well with the ball taking 3-31.

At the Diamond Cricket ground, the rain-hit match between Islamabad and Northern Areas ended in a draw.

The home side hit up 518 with Bilal Asad cracking a fine 204 in which he struck 24 fours and two sixes. Ameer Khan contributed 87 and Rao Iftikhar scored 50 runs. Shah Laeeq finished with 7-144.

Northern Areas were 57 for three when rain stopped play, all three wickets being picked up by Rao Iftikhar.

Our Sports Correspondent adds from Lahore: Left-arm medium-pacer Jamshed Ahmed captured five for 55 to help North Zone Whites defeat East Zone Blues by 211 runs in the Lahore region fixture.

Chasing a formidable target of 407, East Zone Blues were all out for 195 despite good batting by opener Umar Javed (86) and Intikhab Alam (61).

North Zone Blues defeated West Zone Whites by four wickets. Set to score 250, North Zone Blues romped home by scoring 253 for six in 63.4 overs.

In a low-scoring match West Zone Blues defeated East Zone Whites by six wickets. Requiring 191, West Zone Blues surpassed it in the 60th over.

Our Sports Reporter adds from Karachi: Heavy rain in the city at the weekend played havoc with the third round matches in the Karachi region.

Just one innings was possible in the three scheduled ties. Nazimabad-Asifabad Zone, who resumed at 17 for no wicket, made 283 for nine in 60 overs against Federal ‘B’ Area-New Karachi Zone at Asifabad Sports ground.

The matches between Old Karachi Zone and North Nazimabad-Orangi Zone at Students Sports ground and Liaquatabad-Gulshan Zone versus Landhi-Korangi Zone at the Landhi Gymkhana ground were abandoned without a ball being bowled.
