KARACHI: A policeman, who .was shot at and wounded by suspects in a Korangi area on Saturday, died during treatment, officials said on Monday.

Head constable Asghar Ahmad, 35, was riding a motorbike and wearing uniform when gunmen on another motorcycle opened fire on him at Korangi No 5 near Bappan Park on Saturday.

He suffered critical injuries and fell off the bike. The suspects took away his pistol.

The injured policeman was taken to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for treatment, where he died during treatment on Sunday night, said Dr Seemin Jamali, executive director of the JPMC. She said the constable was in critical condition when brought to the hospital as he had suffered bullet wounds in the abdomen and chest.

The martyred official was posted at the Zaman Town police station.

He left behind a wife and five children, said a police spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the martyred policeman’s funeral prayer was held at the police headquarters in Garden on Monday, which was attended by Karachi police chief Ghulam Nabi Memon and other senior officers. The police spokesperson said that Asghar was martyred by “enemies of peace” in Karachi.
