SWABI: The academic staff of Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology on Wednesday paid tribute to Professor Toshio Fujita from Japan, who was teaching in the institute, and had passed away in a hospital in Islamabad on June 27.

GIK Institute Rector Jehangir Bashar and faculty members said they had adopted a resolution in the meeting of the Governing Council about his services to the institute.

They said that the institute had lost a tall academic pillar, Toshio Fujita, and termed his death a great loss for the GIK Institute and expressed deep sorrow and grief over his demise.

His services for the institute were eulogised by the rector, senior management and members of the faculty, saying the professor would be remembered by the GIK Institute for being an outstanding faculty member having great integrity.

Paying tribute to Toshio Fujita, the council expressed sympathy with the bereaved Japanese family.

Mr Fujita was appointed as an associate professor in the GIK Institute in 2016. His areas of expertise included International Business and Development Economics. He contributed his services to the Management Sciences Department for four years. The participants said that he was a teacher par excellence and an inspiration for his students.

KILLED: A man was killed when he allegedly resisted arrest by police in a village of Chota Lahor tehsil here on Wednesday.

The victim, Jalal Khan, belonged to Jalbai village. The police claimed that there was a case of theft against him and they went to the village to arrest him, but he was killed.

When contacted, district police officer Imran Shahid claimed that when the police tried to snatch a pistol from him he pushed its trigger accidentally and a single bullet fired resulted in his killing.

Answering a question, he, however, said that they would conduct an inquiry into the incident.
