Snooker: Top players suffer defeats

KARACHI, Sept 19: Top four seeded players suffered astonishing defeats at the hands of lower ranked cueists in their group matches on the opening day of the three-day KC Ian Fyfe memorial snooker championship at the Amir Bux billiards hall, Karachi Club, on Monday.

Punjab’s fifth ranked player, Imran Shehzad, was the pick of the day as he not only slammed a century break but also won both of his matches. He conjured up a break of 102 in the sixth frame in his 4-2 triumph against fourth ranked Abu Saim. He was home 76-54, 91-8, 65-57, 1-81, 48-65 and 102-29.

Continuing his form, Imran disposed of second seed Muhammad Yousuf 4-3 in the fully stretched battle. The former won 33-89, 93-5, 102-32, 7-77, 1-61, 68-13 and 64-23.

This was Yousuf’s second defeat as he went down 3-4 to Shehram Changezi in the opening match.

Top ranked Saleh Muhammad who was knocked out in quarterfinals of Latif Masters, continued his dismal run going down to seventh ranked Khurram Agha 2-4. The latter romped home 58-5, 23-72, 38-93, 65-20, 55-31 and 68-0.

Third seed, Naveen Perwani, who successfully retained his Latif Masters’ crown, fell victim to sixth seed, Atiq Latif Bux 2-4.
