Mulan to launch on Disney Plus

The live-action adaptation of Disney’s Mulan will be released on Disney+ on September 4, with a release in select theatres in locations where cinemas are open and where Disney+ is unavailable. The news was revealed by company CEO Bob Chapek.

Chapek said: “We’re pleased to bring Mulan to a consumer base that’s been waiting for it as we’ve had to move our (release) dates several times.

We’re looking at Mulan as a one-off as opposed trying to say that there’s a new business windowing model.”

Mulan was scheduled to be released on March 27, 2020 but was removed from the schedule due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Directed by Whale Rider helmer Niki Caro, Mulan tells both the tale of Chinese folklore legend The Ballad of Mulan and also the 1998 animated film of the same name by Disney.

The official premise reads: “When the Emperor of China issues a decree that one man per family must serve in the Imperial Army to defend the country from Northern invaders, Hua Mulan, the eldest daughter of an honoured warrior, steps in to take the place of her ailing father.

The film stars Liu Yifei as Mulan, along with Donnie Yen, Jason Scott Lee, Yoson An, Gong Li, and Jet Li.

Billboard Music Awards in October

The Billboard Music Awards announced a new date for their 2020 awards show. The 2020 Billboard Music Awards will air October 14 at 8pm EDT on NBC, according to Billboard’s website.

The awards were originally scheduled for April 29. They had to postpone due to precautions over the Covid-19 pandemic. Billboard confirms that Kelly Clarkson will still host the Billboard Music Awards. It will be the singer’s third year in a row hosting the show.

Award shows have adapted to the Covid-19 pandemic in different ways. The BET Awards held a remote ceremony by Zoom. The Emmys plans to have a similar remote ceremony.

The MTV Video Music Awards have opted for an outdoor ceremony with little or no audience in attendance. Billboard did not announce how they plan to conduct the October 14 ceremony.
