BAHAWALPUR, Jan 19: Five prayer leaders were arrested on the charge of misusing loudspeakers here on Saturday.
Civil Lines police arrested Abdul Sattar and Hassan Mahmud from Rehmat Colony while Saddar police held Hafiz Khadim Hussain, Muhammad Bilal and Ghulam Hussain from Binora and Karbala Road.
ARRESTED: Eight students of Islamia University were arrested from the hostels of Baghdadul Jadeed campus on the Hasilpur Road after a clash between two groups, including some outsiders.
Those arrested are Muhammad Zaman, Muhammad Hussain, Atif, Asghar Ali, Khalid Bashir, Asmatullah, Muhammad Sarwar and Muhammad Afzal.
Police claimed that two 30 bore unlicensed pistols had also been recovered from Sarwar and Asmatullah.
Meanwhile, five students of Sadiq Egerton College were booked on Saturday for allegedly opening fire on one of their college fellows.
Muhammad Ahmed was leaving the college when Raashid Gujrati, Nek Muhammad, Fayyaz Maitla, Asghar Virk and Aslam fired at him.
Civil Lines police have yet to arrest them.
ARRESTED: A UC councillor and his three accomplices were arrested on the orders of high court for allegedly abducting and raping a girl of Basti Muzaffarabad near Hasilpur.
Bashir Ahmed alleged in his plaint that Aslam along with his accomplices Gulzar, Mukhtar and Wali Muhammad had abducted and raped her daughter. He said Qaimpur police had refused to register a case.
POLIO WALK: The Health department on Saturday organized an anti-polio walk ahead of a three-day polio campaign on Jan 22 in the district.
Led by deputy district Nazim Syed Owais Gardezi, the walk was largely attended by Health officials, BVH doctors, nurses, staff, students, workers of social associations and citizens.
EDO (Health) said that 1,057 mobile teams would administer polio drops to the children of five years of age.
DATA: cThe district administration in collaboration with the Auqaf department have started collecting data of madaris and mosques throughout the district.
It may be mentioned that most of the madaris are attached with their mosques in rural areas.
Dawn learnt that the administration would collect all particulars like the number of students, teachers, their educational qualification and the source of income of madaris.
These madaris will be registered after the survey in the wake of recent address to the nation by President Pervez Musharraf.
