PM urged to highlight India’s occupation of Junagarh

ISLAMABAD: Nawab of Junagarh Muhammad Jahangir Khanji on Monday appealed to Prime Minister Imran Khan to become an ambassador of Junagarh as he did in the case of Kashmir and highlight the issue of liberation of the state from Indian occupation at all international forums.
Addressing a press conference, he said a secretariat of Junagarh should be established in Islamabad to bring the princely state closer to Pakistan.
He said Nov 9 was observed as a black day as on this day in 1947 India occupied the territory of Junagarh. The occupation was against the international law and norms, he added.
Nawab Khanji said that a living nation should remember its history and act accordingly.
Junagarh, he said, had a territory of 4,000 square miles and a 100-mile coastline along the Arabian Sea with many ports. Among the 562 princely states in the Sub-continent, Junagarh was the sixth richest and a welfare state which provided free education to its citizens and took responsibility to provide healthcare facilities to all of them, he added.
He recalled that in October 1947, during his visit to Pakistan his grandfather Nawab Mahabat Khan signed an agreement of accession to Pakistan. During the visit, his grandfather held a meeting with Quaid-i-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah and decided to accede the state to Pakistan. The treaty of accession was ratified by the Constituent Assembly of Pakistan.
In the absence of his grandfather, India landed its troops and occupied the territory of Junagarh on November 9, 1947, he said.
The Nawab said that after the creation of India and Pakistan, the sovereign rulers of the states were given the right of choice to stay independent or accede to India or Pakistan.
He said that Pakistan took the case of occupation of Junagarh to the United Nations Security Council.
He vowed to continue struggle for the liberation of Junagarh.
“I will not rest and will not stay quiet till I have achieved my goal of the liberation of Junagarh,” he said.
The Nawab said that Junagarh was part of Pakistan and it would remain so.
He said that Hindu and Muslim communities in Junagarh still expressed their loyalties to the Nawab of Junagarh. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi should know that Junagarh would be part of Pakistan, he said.
He said it was a dream of the Quaid-i-Azam and his grandfather that Junagarh should be part of Pakistan.
In reply to a question, he said 2.5 million people belonging to Junagarh lived in Pakistan.
He said his grandfather never claimed any property or benefits in Pakistan.

@John The Baptist, This guy is a heir of Junagarh State, living comfortably in Karachi Pak with many more family members, there are thousands of Junagarhians living in Pak, with full respect & integration.
And for your information there’s one more forgotten Manavadar State, also under occupation of India. Their case is identical, some heir from Manavadar State must meet PM Imran Khan, and forward similiar application.

Pakistanis should understand and study how india was divided in 1947. All british regions were divided based on religion thats how east n west pak were created. Pak was muslim nation but india was secular. Secular doesnt means hindu majority. It means secular. So india can still.have muslims majority regions of any princely states. Secularism.is not that india will have only hindu majority places only. Pakistan being islamic state cant have hindu majority areas as it wud be bad for the hindus.

With the independence of India in 1947, the princely states were left by the British to decide whether to accede to one of the newly independent states of India or Pakistan or to remain outside them. The Constitutional Advisor to the Nawab, Nabi Baksh, indicated to Lord Mountbatten that he was recommending that Junagarh should join India. However, upon the advice of Dewan Bhutto, on 15 August 1947, the Nawab announced that Junagarh had acceded to Pakistan.

That accession was never approved by Britain and declared illegal as it has no border with Pakistan. King argument is that it can be accessed via sea. The case can be filed in ICJ. Also, it was left to India via Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto. Kashmir issue can be solved as per the Independence Act. If Pakistan wins Junagarh case legally then should exchange/extract the same amount of land from the Princely state of J&K. After removal of article 370, demanding plebiscite is not the right approach.

And do note, if you believe that India needs to vacate Junagarh, remember, the circumstances mirror Kashmir. Pakistan will have to leave Kashmir on the same principle.

Nawab Jahangir Khanji is right . PM Imran must understand that Pakistan has no claim whatsoever on Kashmir as the late Maharaja Hari Singh II acceded legally and formally to the Republic of India in 1947. On the other hand , late Nawab Mahabat Khanji of Junagarh (grandfather of the present Nawab) acceded to Pakistan and our legal claim is very much there.

Do Pakistanis realize that Junagarh and Kashmir are exactly opposite cases. Pakistan has been saying all along that Kashmir accession to India is illegal as the maharaja signed it without the consent of the people. In Junagarh case the Nawab signed the accession with Pakistan whereas the people wanted to go to India as a plebiscite was done there and more than 90% people voted for India. Supporting Junagarh will weaken Kashmir case for Pakistan ...think about it..

There is no end to such controversies if everyone digs China has to vacate Tibet and Taiwan as it was occupied forcefully Pakistan has to restore independence to Balochistan there are peoples who do not accpet the ceding of Balochistan to Pakistan and so on.IF pakistan is going to raise such issues seriously, then one thing can be assured, that, pakistan will remain as an underdeveloped country as it wil spend another century thinking that it can merge junagarh with pakistan similar to kashmir.

I didn't even now that Junagarh existed but now that I know, it must be returned to Pakistan. Even Delhi and Bombay belong to Pakistan, given how they have been destroyed by India with extremely poor people dying on the roads and trash everywhere. Pakistan should create separate secretariat and other offices in Pakistan and in UN also for Kashmir, Junagarh, Indian Hyderabad, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Assam, Maosit affected areas in India, opposition ruled states in India, and so on. Let us allocate good budget for these so that some good work can happen. Without budget it will be useless. Also, very important is to have one black day allocated in a year for every area as holiday for whole Pakistan.

A plebiscite was held on 20 February 1948, in which all but 91 out of 190,870 who voted
(from an electorate of 201,457) voted to join India,
