KHYBER: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a police officer in Jamrud and injured his driver on Tuesday.

Officials said former Jamrud SHO Gula Jan along with his driver was on way home in Shah Kas area in his personal vehicle when two armed men riding a motorcycle opened fire on them.

They said Gula Jan received critical injuries and was immediately rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. His driver, however, survived with minor injuries.

The armed attackers managed to escape.

The police said they had registered a case against the unknown assailants and started investigations.

The slain Gula Jan served as the first SHO of the newly-established Jamrud police station after the erstwhile Fata’s merger with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the extension of the Police Act to the region.

The incident is the third of its kind in Jamrud during the last couple of weeks. Earlier, policemen were targeted in Shah Kas and Ghareeza localities.

The police have arrested an Afghan national along with a local accomplice for being involved in firing on a police patrol a week ago. Nobody was hurt in the incident.

A school watchmen was also killed in similar fashion some three weeks ago in Jamrud’s Samar Bagh locality
