KARACHI: The Young Lyari Club won the senior category title in the1st two day Karachi Women’s Boxing Championship with three gold and one silver medal.
The Janbaz Boxing Club won one gold and two silver medals and took the second position.
In the junior category, Faqir Colony Boxing Club emerged first with three gold medals while Young Baloch Club emerged runner-up with two gold medals. Young Lyari Boxing Club’s Sarah Malang was declared championship’s best boxer.
The championship was played at Ali Muhammad Qambrani Boxing Stadium Lyari under the auspices of Sindh Boxing Association and in collaboration with DMC South. As many as 47 female boxers participated from three districts of Karachi including South, West and Central.
In the junior finals, Sehar Rashid defeated Mahesh Akhtar 3-0 in the 36kg weight category, Aaliya Soomro defeated Naseeba Sattar by 2-1 in the 38kg category and Rukhsar Sher defeated Imam Fatima 3-0 in the 40kg category. In the senior category final, Samia Khan defeated Ganj Bibi 3-0 in 48kg, Gul Jabeen defeated Asawara 2-1 in 52kg and Sarah Malang defeated Samira 3-0 in 60kg bout to win the gold medal.
Special guest of the final, Deputy Commissioner South Irshad Ali Sodhar distributed prizes among the players and officials. Addressing the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner said: “Lyari was called the boxing nursery in Pakistan. In the past too, many players from here have made the country famous through their talent at the international and national level.
He said that all possible steps are being taken to provide best infrastructure as per international standards to the boxers of Lyari so that they can reach the victory stand in events like Olympics and Asian Games. “Our target is to see our boxers at the victory stand in events like the Olympics and the Asian Games,” the deputy commissioner said.
“Ali Mohammad Qambrani Boxing Ring has been upgraded and all the boxing clubs of Lyari will be provided basic sports equipment in phases.”
Olympian Malang Baloch, Member POA Environmental Commission Tehmina Asif, President Karachi Sports Foundation Wasim Hashmi, Vice Chairman SOA Asif Azeem, President Sindh Boxing Association Asghar Baloch, KBBA President Ghulam Mohammad, Karachi South Boxing Secretary Abdul Razzaq were also present.
