PESHAWAR: A special meeting of the senate of Islamia College University on Wednesday decided to remove the pro vice-chancellor, Dr Nowshad, from the office over reported irregularities and mismanagement.

The senate made the decision in light of an inquiry conducted by Governor Inspection Team (GIT), blaming the management of Islamia College University for irregularities, unrest and mismanagement in the institution.

The senate meeting chaired by Governor Shah Farman, who is also chancellor of the public sector universities in the province, discussed inquiry reports of GIT and took the decision, according to a statement issued from the Governor’s House.

A month ago, the chancellor has already sent the pro-VC on force leave for a period of 90 days when GIT reported irregularities, mismanagement and unrest in the university.

Before sending on force leave, the pro-VC was officiating the office of vice-chancellor in the absence of a regular VC. The vice chancellor of Agricultural University, Prof Jan Bakht, has been assigned additional charge of ICU in the absence of a regular VC and pro-VC.

The senate decided that a show cause notice would also be served on Dr Nowshad in that regard by the syndicate of the university. The meeting also decided to float advertisement for filling the posts of registrar, treasurer, controller examinations and provost in ICU. The recruitment process would be completed within three months.

Speaking on the occasion, Governor Shah Farman said that purpose of appointment on the posts was to appoint administrative officers rather than teaching staff. He said that ICU was a historic educational institution and its credibility would be maintained at all costs.

He said that there would be no compromise on quality education and future of young generation.

Besides other members of senate, the meeting was attended by MPA Arbab Mohammad Waseem Khan, Agricultural University VC Dr Jehan Bakht, Principal Secretary to Governor Idrees Khan and Additional Secretary of Finance Safer Ahmed.

It is worth mentioning that the tenure of the regular VC of ICU, Prof Habib Ahmad, had expired over one year ago and since then, the provincial government hasn’t appointed a regular vice-chancellor of the university.

The provincial cabinet a couple of days ago approved names for appointment of VCs of eight public sector universities including ICU. The names of VCs of public sector universities have been recommended by the academic search committee after conducting their interviews on November 17 and 18.

The names of the VCs would be notified by the higher education department after final approval of the chancellor.
