Apple-1, signed by Steve Wozniak, up for auction

Up for auction is a rare piece of personal computing history — a fully functional Apple-1 computer with its original box signed by designer Steve Wozniak.

The Apple-1, one of only a handful known to still exist with its original shipping box, was restored to its original working condition in September. The box was signed by Wozniak during a 2005 event at the University of California, Los Angeles.

The Apple-1 was designed by Wozniak and Apple co-founder Steve Jobs in 1976. They built about 200 of the personal computers and sold 175.

The computer set to be auctioned includes the original Apple-1 Operation Manual and original Apple Cassette Interface manual, and a programme from the 2005 event where Wozniak signed the box.

Time’s first-ever “Kid of the Year” award

A teenage scientist and inventor named Time magazine’s first-ever ‘Kid of the Year’.

Gitanjali Rao, 15, has invented technologies including a device that can identify lead in drinking water, and an app that detects cyberbullying. She was chosen from more than 5,000 US nominees for the landmark title.

In an interview with actor and humanitarian Angelina Jolie, Ms Rao said “My goal has really shifted not only from creating my own devices to solve the world’s problems, but inspiring others to do the same as well. Because, from personal experience, it’s not easy when you don’t see anyone else like you.”

Ms Rao, from Colorado, was previously named “America’s top young scientist” for inventing a quick, low-cost test to detect lead-contaminated water. Time magazine began naming its Man of the Year in 1927, and later updated it to Person of the Year. Last year, Greta Thunberg, the Swedish schoolgirl who inspired a global movement to fight climate change, became the youngest person ever to be chosen by the magazine.

Posthumous MTV award for Chadwick Boseman

The late “Black Panther” star, Chadwick Boseman, will receive MTV’s Hero for the Ages honour during the “MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time” special. He will be presented with the posthumous award by his “Avengers: Endgame” co-stars Robert Downey Jr. and Don Cheadle, who played Iron Man and War Machine, respectively, in the comic-book film franchise.

The award “honours a star whose heroism on-screen was only surpassed by the true hero they were off-screen,” MTV said in a statement. It recognises Boseman’s performances as a number of American heroes, as well as his activism, writing and directing.

Boseman died in August at age 43 after privately battling colon cancer. His performance in the ground breaking Black Panther clinched wins in the hero and performance in movie categories. MTV has already paid tribute to the beloved actor a week after his death by dedicating the MTV VMAs in August to the late star.
