PESHAWAR, Oct 6: The PML-backed Khushhal Pakistan Group won 10 of the 24 districts in the NWFP, followed by the JUI (F) which bagged four, in the third and last phase of the local bodies elections held on Thursday.
The Jamaat-i-Islami suffered a setback in Nowshera district where Qazi Hussain Ahmad’s son, Asif Luqman Qazi, lost to the PPP candidate. The JI, however, won in three districts.
The ANP, which lost in Peshawar, won in two districts, so did the PML-N and the PPP-S, winning two districts each.
The PPP was almost routed, winning only in Nowshera. Other surprises came from Dera Ismail Khan where Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s brother Obaidur Rehman lost to ex-senator Mukhtiar Khan and from Charsadda the base of the ANP leadership and Interior Minister Aftab Sherpao, where their candidates lost to PML’s Naseer Khan.
PESHAWAR: Haji Ghulam Ali, whose son is married to Maulana Fazlur Rehman’s daughter, unexpectedly won the Peshawar Nazim’s seat by a big margin, defeating Haroon Bilour, a scion of the Bilour family and joint candidate of Jamaat-i-Islami and Awami National Party.
Mr Ali was fielded by the four-party alliance of Pakistan People’s Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F), PPP (S) and Pakistan Muslim League. The PPP won three of the four towns, while the ANP bagged the slot of nazim of Town IV. Haji Shaukat Ali, a former naib nazim of Town-I, won the slot of nazim Town I, Haji Mohammad Sharif of Town II, and Eng. Shakirullah Khan of Town III. Arbab Amir Ayub of the ANP won the post of nazim Town IV.
NOWSHERA: PPP-backed Daud Khattak won the district nazim’s post, polling 203 votes against Asif Luqman Qazi who bagged 178. ANP candidate Mian Rashid Ali got 157 and came third.
DIR (LOWER): Al-Khidmat-backed Haji Mohammad Rasool defeated former provincial minister Ahmed Hasan Khan of the PPP by one vote. According to unofficial results, Haji Rasool bagged 201 and Ahmed Hasan Khan 200 votes. Three votes were rejected.
In Tehsil Temargarah, Mohammad Omar, a joint candidate of PPP (S) and JI, defeated ANP-backed Shamsul Qamar. In Tehsil Samar Bagh, Haji Bahadur Khan of ANP defeated Saeed Ahmed Bacha of Al- Khidmat.
DIR (UPPER): Jamaat-i-Islami-backed Sahibzada Tariqullah, former district nazim, defeated PPP’S provincial secretary Najmuddin Khan by four votes.
BATTAGARAM: JUI-backed Ehsanullah Khan defeated Ataur Rehman of Khushhal Pakistan group for the seat of district nazim.
HANGU: Former provincial minister Ghaniur Rehman backed by PPP-S defeated Haji Khan Afzal, a joint nominee of JUI, ANP and PML-N, by polling 114 votes for the post of district nazim. Mr Rehman was convicted by an accountability court of concealing assets. Aminullah Akbar of the PPP-S was elected nazim of tehsil Hangu and Amanullah of the PML-N of nazim tehsil Tal.
MANSEHRA: Sardar Mohammad Yousuf, deputy secretary-general of the ruling PML, was elected Nazim of Mansehra. He defeated former district Nazim Ahmed Hussain. Khuram Hanif Khan, son of a former information minister Mohammad Hanif Khan, was elected nazim of tehsil Mansehra. Laiq Mohammad Khan won the post of nazim Ogai, while independent candidate Syed Junaid Ali Qasim, son of former minister Syed Qasim Shah, won the post of nazim of tehsil Balakot.
CHITRAL: Maghfirat Shah of Jamaat-i-Islami defeated former district nazim Shahzada Mohyuddin in Chitral. Sartaj Ahmad Khan of Chitral Dost group was elected tehsil nazim of Chitral.
MARDAN: Advocate Himayatullah Mayar, a joint candidate of Watan Dost and Al-Khidmat group, was elected district Nazim of Mardan, defeating his rivals by a big margin.
The alliance also won the seat of tehsil nazim Takhtbhai but lost the Mardan tehsil to Ihsan Bacha fielded by Khushal Pakistan Group.
ABBOTTABAD: PML-backed candidate Sardar Haider Zaman was elected Nazim of Abbottabad district. The two Tehsil nazims (Abbotabad, Havelian) seats were won by PML nominee Saifullah Khan Jadoon and Mehmood Hayat Abbasi of (JUI-F).
SWABI: The Swabi Jamhoori Ittehad’s candidate Shahram Khan won the district nazim seat.
Mr Shahram is son of renowned entrepreneur Liaqat Khan Tarakai.
DERA ISMAIL KHAN: Khushal Pakistan group’s candidate and former senator Mukhtiar Ahmad Khan won the post of district Nazim by obtaining 351 votes. In Tehsil Dera ex-Tehsil nazim won the slot for the second time by obtaining 127 votes.
In Tehsil Kulachi, Muttahida Group’s candidate Sardar Saminullah Khan Gandapur won the post of nazim.
In a one-to-one contest in Tehsil Parova, Fakharullah Khan Miankhel of Miankhel group won slot of Tehsil nazim and in Tehsil Paharpur, Makhdoom Altaf of Makhdoom group defeated his rival Jahanzeb by 30 votes.
In Tehsil Daraban Kalan, Qaizar Khan Miankhel of Miankhel won the nazim’s post.
LAKKI MARWAT: According to unofficial results, Humayun Saifullah Khan, joint candidate of Muttahida-Khushal Pakistan Alliance grabbed the seat of district nazims by securing 213 votes. His rival, former MNA Naseer Muhammad Khan Maidadkhel, obtained 170 votes.
Advocate Fareedullah Khan Meenakhel of Watan Nawaz group won the post of tehsil nazim Lakki and Anwar Hayat Khan of Watan Nawaz group won in tehsil Naurang.
BANNU: Azam Khan Durrani, cousin of Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani, won the slot of nazim Bannu by polling 430, while his rival Senator Prof Mohammad Ibrahim, a former provincial chief of Jamaat-i-Islami, secured only 88 votes.
Malik Raza, a joint nominee of JUI and PML-N, won the slot of nazim Town I and Nematullah Khan of the same group the post of nazim Town II.
KOHAT: Seth Gohar Saifullah Khan Bangash of Khushhal Pakistan group won the post of district nazim, defeating Watan Dost’s Omar Khan.
HARIPUR: PML-N’s candidate and former provincial minister Yousaf Ayub Khan won Haripur district nazim seat by a thin margin of five votes. However, the party lost to ruling PML’s candidate in the run for Ghazi Tehsil nazim seat.
CHARSADDA: Naseer Mohammad Khan of the PML was elected nazim.
KARAK: Rehmat Salam Khattak of PML-N’s Watan Nawaz Group won the slot of district nazim.
TANK: In Tank district, Riaz Kundi of PML, son of former provincial minister Habibullah Kundi, defeated Nawabzada Bin Yamin Khan of PPP-S.
BUNER: Abdur Rauf Khan of Watan Dost Group bagged 167 votes defeating Zar Farosh of the JI who obtained 152 votes.
KOHISTAN: JUI-F’s Dr Saifur Rehman was elected nazim. He defeated former nazim Maulana Obaidullah of Jamaat-i-Islami.
SHANGLA: PML’s Dr Ibadullah was elected district Nazim.
MALAKAND: PPP-S’s candidate Haji Fida Mohammad was elected nazim by five votes. He was supported by JUI-F and PML.
SWAT: PML’s Jamal Nasir secured 338 votes against 207 obtained by Malik Sardar Ali who had support of JUI-F, ANP and PPP-S. PPP- S’ Fazalur Rehman Nono was elected tehsil nazim Mingora, while tehsil Matta’s nazim post was grabbed by Abdul Jabbar Khan of PQP.
