NORTH WAZIRISTAN: Unidentified gunmen shot dead a young doctor here on Friday night.

District police officer Shafiullah Gandapur said that Dr Waliullah, an assistant professor of pathology at the Gaju Khan Medical College, Swabi, was shot dead on the Mirali Bypass Road. He said that the incident occurred at around 9pm and that investigations were underway.

Dr Zahid Iqbal Dawar, who was accompanying the slain pathologist, told mediapersons on Saturday that they were going to Mirali from Peshawar when their car came under heavy firing near the Ipi village. He said that a bullet hit Dr Wali on the back.

“There was heavy firing when our vehicle was passing through the bypass road,” he said. He said that Dr Wali succumbed to injuries while being taken to a clinic by his (Wali’s) brother Dr Assad.

Family sources said that Dr Wali regularly visited his hometown on weekends where he served at a private laboratory. They said that Dr Wali and his family had no personal enmity.

Meanwhile, the local chapter of the Young Doctors Association condemned the killing and gave a strike call for Monday. The association demanded immediate arrest of the killers.
