RAWALPINDI, Jan 21: Rawalpindi took control of their Quaid Trophy match against Rest of NWFP Monday as they set a 298-run target for the visiting team at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium.

The Rest who began the day at the overnight score of 35 for three could not stand up against the Rawalpindi attack and conceded a first innings lead of 130.

Of the Frontier boys only opener Ahmed Said got into double figures, scoring 62 while others were simply unimpressive. Pacers Yasir Arafat and Naeem Akhtar were the destroyers and snapped up four and three wickets respectively.

Rawalpindi then put on 167 in their second innings with opener Babar Naeem cracking a 53-ball 43 and Shahid Javed in the middle order getting 29. The chief wicket-taker was again spinner Noorul Amin who claimed four victims to add to his six in the first innings. Umair Khan captured three while Sajid Shah grabbed two.

The Rest, beginning their chase for an improbable victory were four for one at the close of play, those runs coming from leg byes.

Test discard Mohammad Zahid struck early to remove Akbar Badshah for nought and as the teams trooped off, Ahmed Said and Noorul Amin were together, with both still to open their account.
