SUKKUR: Tangwani civil court judge Munawar Hussain Pirzada on Tuesday awarded an ingenious punishment to five suspects accused of obstructing official duties.
The judge ordered the suspects identified as Aijaz Malik, Ali, Wazir, Shoukat and Saeed Sharbat to grow 50 trees in a nearby village and look after them, punctually offer prayers five times a day and recite the holy Quran in addition to Rs5,000 fine each.
The convicts would regularly report to the court about compliance with the verdict and in case of failure they would be sent to jail, said the court order.

Serving the public in lieu of going to jail is a common punishment in the United States.

It’s this kind of lunacy from the courts I keep banging on about! Destroyed any accountability!

Though this looks nice, Judges should follow law and not their own wishes. Next Judge may not be same but use this as precedent.

One complete package. Suspects would feel really thankful to the Judge in hereafter.

If similar judgements were given to some of our corrupt politicians and bureaucrats, we would end up with lots and lots of badly needed jungles.

@AZAM AKBAR, It's a standard practice in other countries. It's called community service as a punishment
