KARACHI: An imposter was arrested in Clifton, who presented himself as an army officer and committed crimes, said a Rangers spokesperson.

The paramilitary force and police conducted an intelligence-based action in a Boat Basin area and detained the suspect identified as Irfan Ahmed.

The held suspect presented himself as a colonel of a security institution and committed different types of crimes, added the official.

He was a resident of Moosa Lane in Lyari.

He had extorted huge amounts of money from people while promising to provide admissions to them or their children to medical colleges, jobs and degrees of different academic institutes.

The paramilitary force said that a fake identity card of a security institution, uniform and fake documents of different institutions were also seized from him.

Subsequently, he was handed over to police for further legal action.

‘Afghan gang leader’ held

A suspected robber was shot at and arrested in an encounter in a PECHS locality on Friday, said Ferozeabad police.

They added that “encounter took place between police and five criminals at a bungalow on Kushhal Road behind Tariq Road, in which one dacoit Ghulam Shaki, alias Imran, was arrested in wounded condition while his four companions escaped”.

One 9mm pistol along with five rounds, mobile phone and Rs105,000 looted cash were recovered from his possession.

According to East SSP Sajid Amir Sadozai, the injured suspect is the “ring leader of an interprovincial Afghan gang of criminals”.

The officer added that this gang was involved in over 50 house robberies.

Three ‘extortionists’ held

Police and Rangers carried out a joint action in Memon Goth and arrested three alleged extortionists namely Nisar, alias Ustad; Waqar Ali and Yasir Ali.

They had demanded protection money from a shopkeeper in Malir City on Feb 9 and carried out an armed attack on the shop on Feb 28 over non-payment of money.

The held suspects belonged to Lyari gang warfare elements, said Malir SSP Irfan Bahadur.

Labourer shot dead

A 40-year-old labourer was shot dead in the presence of his brother over personal enmity in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Friday, said police.

They added that Zafar Khan, 40, along with his brother was on his way to work when armed motorcyclists opened fire on him near the football ground in Husain Hazara Goth and fled.

He suffered critical bullet wounds and died. Area SHO Azam Gopang said that the victim hailed from Bajaur Agency who worked as a labourer in the metropolis. The brother who remained unhurt in the incident told the police that they had an old enmity in their native town.

Woman found dead

A woman was found dead in Kalakot area of Lyari on Friday and her family claimed that she had been killed by her husband.

The police said the body of Noreen, 29, was recovered from a home near Wood Market in Kalakot. The corpse was taken to the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital where doctors said she had died from consumption of some poisonous substance.

Area SHO Asif Munawwar said that apparently she had committed suicide by taking poison, but her family claimed that she was murdered allegedly by her husband over some domestic issues.

The police have registered a murder case.
