KARACHI: A judicial magistrate on Wednesday remanded in police custody a suspect for allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl.
Police arrested and booked the man for his alleged involvement in assaulting his 10-year-old neighbour in the Essa Nagri area.
On Wednesday, the investigating officer produced the suspect before the judicial magistrate (east) to seek his physical remand for interrogation and investigation.
He informed that the suspect was a neighbour of the victim who used to visit his house for tuition. On the day of the incident, the suspect allegedly subjected her to a sexual assault when she came to his house, he added.
The IO said the custody of the suspect was required for interrogation, completion of investigation and other legal formalities. Therefore, he requested for 14-day physical remand of the suspect.
However, the judge remanded the suspect in police custody for three days and directed the IO to produce him on the next date along with an investigation report.
Following the incident on Tuesday, victim’s relatives and neighbours had allegedly surrounded the suspect’s house, blocked the road for vehicular movement to lodge a violent protest in which some four policemen were reportedly wounded. Later, the suspect was arrested and booked in a case registered at the PIB Police Station.
Man remanded in ex-professor killing case
A judicial magistrate remanded on Wednesday a suspected robber for allegedly killing a former professor and wounding her husband.
Police booked Shahidur Rehman for allegedly attacking the couple, as they went for shopping for their son’s wedding in Sharifabad on April 22.
On Wednesday, the IO informed the magistrate (central) that the suspect, who was in jail in connection with another case, was allegedly involved in the attack on the couple.
He added that during interrogation the suspect had also confessed to his involvement in shooting at the couple when they allegedly resisted a robbery attempt.
The IO claimed that 62-year-old Nasreen had succumbed to her wounds at the Liaquat National Hospital, while her 65-year-old husband Irfan had survived bullet wounds.
Police claimed to have recovered one spent bullet casing from the crime scene, said the IO, adding that custody of the suspect was required for interrogation.
Therefore, the judge issued a production order of the suspect, directing prison authorities to produce him in court on the next date.
A case was registered at the Sharifabad police station.
‘Impersonator’ sent to prison
An accountability court (AC) remanded a suspect detained for allegedly cheating the public of Rs18 million by impersonation.
The National Accountability Bureau arrested and booked Amir Hussain for allegedly defrauding citizens by impersonating to be a son of a fake director general of NAB.
On Wednesday, the IO produced the suspect before the administrative judge of the accountability courts, Abdul Ghani Soomro, upon expiry of his physical remand and requested for extension in the same.
The IO informed that the suspect had defamed NAB by cheating the public in the name of the bureau. He said further custody of the suspect was required for interrogation since his fleeing father was yet to be arrested and investigation was still incomplete.
He requested the judge to extend physical remand of the suspect in the custody of NAB.
On the other hand, a defence counsel for the suspect opposed the IO’s plea for extension in remand.
The judge remanded the suspect in judicial custody till May 20 directing the IO to produce him on the next date along with an investigation report.
