PESHAWAR: The Awami National Party has demanded an impartial probe into the May 12, 2007, mayhem in order to identify those responsible for the killing of innocent people in Karachi.

Former Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry was stopped from attending a reception hosted by the Sindh High Court during the lawyers’ movement for independence of judiciary.

In a statement issued here on Wednesday, ANP central senior vice-president Ameer Haider Khan Hoti said his party had been demanding impartial inquiry into the incident from the day one but almost 14 years had lapsed but there had been no concrete action by any organ of the state, including the judiciary.

The people, he said expected the judges that after their reinstatement they would conduct a proper inquiry into the gruesome incident and ensure arrest and punishment to the culprits, but to no avail.

Mr Hoti said May 12 was considered a black day in the country’s history as innocent political workers and lawyers were killed who were peacefully struggling against dictatorship and for restoration of democracy and judiciary.
