LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly secretariat has notified a parliamentary committee to discuss water distribution issues with Sindh Assembly members.

The house had on May 26 discussed the alleged violation of Water Apportionment Accord 1991 following the raising of the issue in the Sindh Assembly two days earlier and on a suggestion by Law Minister Raja Basharat unanimously agreed on forming an informal committee of Punjab MPAs to present the province’s viewpoint to their counterparts in Sindh and dispel the propaganda against Punjab on the subject.

The following committee has been accordingly constituted: Irrigation Minister Mohsin Leghari, Public Prosecution Minister Chaudhry Zaheeruddin, MPAs Sajid Ahmed Khan, Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan, Syed Usman Mehmood and Malik Ahmad Ali Aulakh.

The committee will explain and clarify the viewpoint of Punjab regarding distribution of water among provinces and will endeavour to eradicate inter-provincial water sharing conflicts, says a press release issued by the assembly secretariat on Wednesday.

It will also propose a solution to the dispute and recommend a joint strategy for the distribution of water among the provinces.
