CHITRAL: Lower Chitral district police officer Sonia Shamroze Khan has asked the members of the dispute resolution council (DRC) to use the platform for establishing peace and social harmony in the area as it has great scope of success in the district.

Speaking at a meeting of the DRC on Monday, she said keeping in view the enormity of the area it was necessary to hold the sessions of the council in different valleys, including Garam Chashma, Karimabad, Drosh, Arandu, Ayun and Kalash valleys.

She added that holding sessions of the council in these valleys would facilitate the people to get their disputes resolved at their doorsteps, thus saving them from the hassle of travelling to the district headquarters at great expense.

The meeting also decided to pursue the women to attend the DRC meetings for resolution of their issues.

In a separate development, a grade 9 girl student committed suicide by jumping into the river in Sonoghur village of Upper Chitral on Monday. The police said the victim was said to have altercations with her family.

This is the second incident to have occurred in the village during the current month as a 17-year-old student had earlier ended his life by jumping into the river.
