DESPITE possessing a rich historical background, Thatta, Sujawal and Badin have never featured prominently on the agenda of the rulers. Regardless of the political dispensation in the country at any given time, the cities of lower Sindh have remained neglected.

I belong to Thatta which was once the centre of education, but has no medical or cadet college today. A medical college could have been easily built in Thatta alongside the local Civil Hospital as there was a lot of land, but the dream could not materialise due to lack of political commitment. Besides, a former provincial chief minister had announced the conversion of the local Army Public School into a cadet college, but that also never happened.

It is disappointing that the government has approved a huge amount for cadet colleges in Panu Aqil, Khairpur and Dadu, but nothing for the cities of lower Sindh where literacy rate is low and these projects can be a real game-changer.

The government must put an end to this discrimination and disparity. Such projects will help improve the literacy rate and provide better health facilities to the locals.
