CHITRAL: The Lower Chitral police have arrested a woman for defrauding people of Rs5 million on different pretexts, including promising them government jobs.

An official of the city police station told Dawn that the accused, Ms Amina, hailing from Torkhow area of Upper Chitral, was arrested a week ago. He said the woman was impersonating herself as a government official.

The official claimed the accused had also links with higher authorities of different departments. He said she used to collect heavy amounts from people on the promise that they would be given jobs in government departments.

The police official said the woman also minted money from people by proclaiming to be a spiritual healer.

The official said the affected people had approached the police for action against the accused. He added a complainant told the police that the woman had taken Rs1 million cash from him on the promise to start a business.

The official said the police had registered a case against her under sections 170 and 420 of PPC. He said a court had sent her to district jail on judicial remand on completion of the investigation against her.

In a separate development, Upper Chitral deputy commissioner Mohammad Ali distributed cheques among the flood-hit people of Brep village of Yarkhoon valley, which had been devastated by flash floods last week.

The floods had rendered 21 families homeless and inundated crops of maize, vegetables and orchards. Mr Ali assured the affected people that every effort would be made to compensate them for the financial losses they suffered.

FOUNDATION DAY: The 14th foundation day of the Aga Khan Higher Secondary School, Kuragh, Upper Chitral, was held on Sunday.

Speaking on the occasion, school principal Sultana Bibi said during the short span of 14 years the institution had become one of the top educational institutions of not only Chitral but also the Malakand division.

She said every year over 50 per cent of the reserved seats of medical and engineering universities were grabbed by the students of the school.
