GUJRANWALA: Teachers, students, civil society representatives and lawyers on Friday protested against the government’s decision of changing the status of the Punjab University Gujranwala Campus to the University of Gujranwala.
The protesters holding banners and placards chanted slogans against the government’s decision to rename the PU campus and Rachna College and change their statue to the University of Gujranwala and demanded its immediate withdrawal.
The protesters, also including former students of the PU campus, said the change in the institution’s status would effect 6,000 students studying in different disciplines there.
They said the decision would lower the value of the students’ degrees, and jeopardise their career in the job market.
The protesters said the government should establish University of Gujranwala at a new place, instead of just putting a new plaque on the PU campus. They warned if the decision was not withdrawn, they would launch a strong agitation against the government. On the other hand, the university administration said it was not taken on board before the issue of the notification in this regard.
