TEACHING BLUNDERS: A few weeks ago, I checked the result card of my two nephews related to their midterm exams and I was shocked to see the ‘blunders’ on the question paper. In one of the questions, the word ‘spelling’ was misspelled. Likewise, ‘twenty’ was written as ‘twentee’ and ‘fifteen’ as ‘five-teen’. It is no wonder that 45 per cent of class IV students in the country cannot read a sentence in English. The government should impose a minimum qualification requirement for primary teachers to save the future of the students.

JUDICIAL EVOLUTION: Talking about the judiciary in the larger context of its historical evolution, it is quite clear that Justice Munir during the reign of governor-general Ghulam Muhammad set the ball rolling with his Doctrine of Necessity. He paved the way for the institution to remain subservient to the ruling elite.

CRIME CONTROL: It is a matter of great concern that children and women cannot travel alone on roads as they fear getting mugged. Unfortunately, the police force is not capable of controlling crimes. Why don’t we train and equip our police properly to be effective in the performance of its duties? We should also train our children not to be enticed by strangers, and the citizens at large should also be aware about ways to tackle such situations.

CITIZEN’s PORTAL: The Citizen’s Portal has achieved milestones through better coordination between officials and the masses. Although other provinces have kept pace with the federal government in ameliorating the conditions of the targeted population, the Sindh government seems to be lagging behind. It could only resolve 38,268 of the total 95,894 registered complaints, apparently due to lack of coordination with the federal government. An independent provincial portal might be able to better address the local issues.
