TEACHING ENGLISH

TEACHING ENGLISH: It has been observed that while teaching English as a second language, the approach of teachers is generally lopsided. Some teachers lay too much emphasis on vocabulary, while others solely depend on the rules of grammar without contextualisation. If written and oral skills are not inculcated in students, the very purpose of teaching English is defeated. To develop students’ written and oral communication skills, they should be exposed to real-life scenarios in addition to teaching rules of grammar with due contextualisation.

CRYPTOCURRENCY: There are many issues regarding the phenomenon of digital currency in Pakistan. The government should regulate the activity and launch its own exchange from which one can buy digital currency. This can become a source of income for the government. Also, commercial banks should not be discouraged from dealing in cryptocurrency as it has not been declared illegal by any court.

QUALITY EDUCATION: This is with reference to the article ‘What a fall’ (Aug 27). I just want to add that private-sector education has been commercialised. Every other person has opened a school and distributed the subjects among a few low-paid teachers. There should be uniform standards for public and private schools monitored regularly by the ministry of education.

TAISER TOWN: The Taiser Town scheme was supposed to be a new urban residential society in Karachi for low-income families. Unfortunately, like other government projects, the plan has remained active in official files, and no development work has been seen on the ground except carpeting of some roads in the area. There is a serious concern that this project, too, will be hijacked by investors who will manipulate the market to the extent that it will go beyond the reach of the poor.
