I am not always a fan of combining sweet and salty flavours, but puff pastry is such a versatile ingredient in terms of flavour and cooking styles that it tastes mouth-watering, whether you make a savoury snack with it or a sweet one.

Today’s recipe is of Oreo puffs — a cookie sandwich wrapped in puff pastry — and baked to golden perfection, using just two ingredients, Oreo and puff pastry!

The combined taste of the two popular items, cookies and puff pastry, is sure to delight the fussiest of eaters. And making it is so easy that the laziest of cooks and non-cooks will add this to their list of favourite things to make.

You can use any sandwich biscuit inside and even add some chocolate spread or Nutella.

While making these was so easy, the best part was the pleasant surprise that came over people when tasting it, since these puffs look so similar to chicken patties that no one expected a cookie sandwich inside.

These are perfect teatime treats or even midnight snacks. I easily reheated them in the microwave and can’t say about how long they can be stored as they were quickly finished off.

I made about 16 puffs using a 500g pack of store-bought puff pastry and used regular-sized Oreos.

Ingredients

• 16 Oreo cookies

• 500g puff pastry crust

• 1 egg, lightly beaten (optional)

Method

Preheat oven to 400°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

Roll the pastry crust evenly, not too thick and not too thin, about half a centimetre. Place an Oreo on it and select a cup or bottle top that is about an inch wide all over. Now cut out circles and place the Oreo on one piece, then cover it with another piece of pastry crust. Gently press the sides with fingers to seal it and then use the tip of a fork to press and make small dent marks at the edges. This not only looks nice but also seals the two pieces well together.

Then brush with whipped egg, but this is optional. I always like to brush whipped eggs on anything I bake with puff pastry as it gives a nice colour and gloss to the surface.

Bake for 15 minutes or until golden and puffy. Remove from oven and cool slightly. Your Oreo puffs are ready to be enjoyed!
