HYDERABAD, Nov 9: The Sindh National Unity Council of the Pakistan Oppressed Nations Movement has alleged that plunder of resources of Sindh is continuing and the province has been deprived of its political, economic and administrative rights.

The council met here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Sindh Ponm president Dr Qadir Magsi.

The meeting was also attended by leaders of the Sindh Sagar Party, Sindh Hari Committee, Jeay Sindh Qaum Parast Party, Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam-F , Sindh National Front and the Jeay Sindh Mahaz.

Speakers said at the meeting that Sindhis had been deprived of their sovereign rights by non-Sindhi people.

The meeting alleged that the Sindh Assembly was being held hostage by the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and as such anti-Sindh schemes were being implemented through the assembly. In this connection, it cited examples of issuance of Computerized National Identity Cards to Biharis, employment in public and private sectors in Karachi on the basis of Karachi domicile and proposed introduction of what it called anti-Sindhi language bill in the Sindh Assembly.

The council charged that by opposing the 1972 Language Bill, the MQM was trying to create ethnic riots and divide Sindh on ethnic basis. It also accused President Gen Pervez Musharraf of supporting the ethnic group.

Opposing a proposal of Sindh Chief Minister Dr Arbab Ghulam Rahim for convening an All-Parties Conference on the language issue, the meeting made it clear that Ponam would not compromise on the issue under any circumstances.

It said Sindhi was the national language of Sindh and it was necessary for all people living in the province to learn the language.

The meeting was of the opinion that after adoption of the Sindhi Language Bill of 1972, the notification against it was illegal and unconstitutional. It demanded that the language bill should be enforced in letter and in spirit.

It also condemned demolition of ancient Sindhi villages in Karachi, allegedly at the behest of the MQM. It charged that the land was being allotted to non-Sindhis at a throw-away price.

Opposing construction of the Kalabagh dam and the greater Thal canal, the meeting demanded that dacoities on the Indus waters should be stopped forthwith. The meeting also condemned the inordinate increase in prices of essential consumer goods and called upon the government to control inflation.

It expressed concern over rampant lawlessness in the province, especially cases of kidnappings, murders and robberies, and demanded that the government should adopt measures to control the crimes.

Dr Magsi alleged that a conspiracy had been hatched to divide Sindh into pieces. He called upon people of Sindh to unite on one platform to protect the national identity of the province.

ADABI SANGAT: The Sindhi Adabi Sangat has taken a strong exception to the inordinate delay in issuance of a notification by the education department about teaching of simple Sindhi language in class-XI.

In a joint statement issued here on Tuesday, Sangat secretary-general Taj Joyo and other office-bearers, including Riazat Buriro, Asif Mithianvi, Noor Chakrani and Maula Bux Kaka, said delay in issuance of the notification was a conspiracy against the Sindhi language and warned that people of the province would not tolerate this.

They warned that if Sindhi and Urdu were made optional subjects in class-XI or if teaching of simple Sindhi as a compulsory subject was not introduced from the current academic year, consequences would be disastrous.

They said they would not accept recommendations of any educational committee on the issue if scholars like Dr Ghulam Ali Allana, Dr Shamsuddin Ursani, Mazhar Jamil and Muslim Shamim and college teachers were not included in the committee.
