NAWABSHAH, Nov 9: Federal Minister for Agriculture Sardar Sikandar Hayat Bosan has said that a special plan is under consideration to make agriculture more profitable in the province.

He was speaking after inaugurating a new variety of wheat, ‘Sakrand-1’, at the Sakrand wheat research institute on Wednesday.

The minister said the government would announce the plan soon.

He said that in the new plan the government would have a share of 80 per cent while growers have a share of 20 per cent.

Mr Bosan said the growers could improve crops if provinces agree on the distribution of water.

He said that Sindh had more potential for agriculture than Punjab.

This year, 23,000 tons more seeds of wheat were available than the last year, he said.

On the occasion, the minister advised farmers to use more phosphorus and avoid excessive fertilizers for better yield.

He said there was a shortage of certified seeds in Sindh and some people were deceiving farmers in the name of certified seeds.

The minister said it was the duty of the seed corporation to provide quality seeds to farmers.

Sindh Agriculture Secretary Nazar Hussain Mahar said that a management committee was being formed for the seed corporation which would start functioning within four to five months.

He said there was a problem of coordination between the centre and the provinces.

The federal minister also visited the Sakrand cotton research institute along with Mohammad Ali Malkani, the state minister for agriculture, Dr Qadir Bux Baloch, the wheat commissioner of Pakistan, Syed Ghulam Ali Shah, the taluka nazim of Sakrand, and Syed Qamaruzzaman Shah.
