SUKKUR: An anti-encroachment drive was launched in different localities of the city on Friday.

Led by Municipal Administrator Ali Raza Ansari, officials and workers of the Sukkur Municipal Corporation with the help of heavy machinery bulldozed a large number of concrete structures, including houses, shops, hotels and warehouses, built on storm-water drains and nullahs in the localities of Shahi Bazaar, Frere Road, Thala Chowk, Qadri Masjid, Jinnah Chowk, Camp Road and Mall Godown Road.

Some groups of encroachers tried to offer resistance but police intervened to push them away, said municipal officials.

A similar drive was also launched in Jacobabad city but only small structures were removed from storm-water drains and nullahs.

Residents of the the operation area and activists of various political parties, nationalist groups and social welfare organisations said private structures on government-owned plots near DC Chowk were not touched in the drive.
