Traffic policeman martyred in Peshawar attack

PESHAWAR: A traffic police official was martyred when unidentified attackers targeted him in Chamkani area on the outskirts of the capital city here on Wednesday afternoon, the police said.

A police official told Dawn that Nauman Khan, an assistant sub-inspector of the city traffic police, was going to join duty when he was targeted by two unknown attackers riding a motorcycle in Sikandarabad locality.

He said the cop belonged to Urmur area of Peshawar. The Chamkani police have yet to register an FIR of the incident.

A senior police official told Dawn that the police were investigating the incident from different angles. He said it was not immediately clear whether it was an act of targeted killing or had some other motive.

The funeral prayers of the martyred cop were offered at the Malik Saad Shaheed police lines later in the evening.

Provincial police chief Moazzam Ja Ansari, minister for forest Ishtiaq Urmur, capital city police officer Abbas Ahsan and other senior officials attended the funeral.

Separately, Chief Minister Mahmood Khan condemned the attack on the traffic police official.
