HARIPUR: A sub-inspector of the Haripur police was killed in a road accident in Baldhair area here on Saturday.

Police and witnesses said retired junior navy officer Niaz Khan was serving as sub-inspector in the Ghazi police station on contract. He was on way to his duty centre on his motorcycle in the afternoon when a speeding pick-up coming from Haripur side struck his bike, leaving him critically injured.

The injured was shifted to the Haripur Trauma Centre, where he succumbed to head injuries, police and hospital sources said. The van driver fled the scene.

Separately, the police on Saturday arrested a man for assaulting a teenage boy in urban area of Haripur.

City police quoted the 13-year-old victim as saying that Nasir Zain, a pakora seller, took him to his shop and forcibly assaulted him. He said the accused also made a video of the act.

The boy said a friend of the accused, namely Shehzad Ahmed, also attempted to assault him, but he resisted.

On the complaint of the boy, the police registered a case under section 377 of the PPC and sections 50 and 53 of the Child Protection Act and arrested the accused.
