ISLAMABAD: A man died in the capital from dengue fever while 179 more contracted the virus in the twin cities on Saturday.

District Health Officer (DHO) Islamabad Dr Zaeem Zia said the deceased was a resident of H-11/4 Katchi Abadi and was admitted to Holy Family Hospital. With the latest casualty, the death toll in the capital has reached 12.

He said during the last 24 hours, 110 cases —71 from urban and 39 from rural areas — were reported, the DHO said, adding that out of the total, 11 each were admitted to Pims and Holy Family Hospital, three to Capital Hospital, two to Benazir Bhutto Hospital and one at Polyclinic, while the remaining 82 were admitted to private hospitals.

Dr Zia said 20 cases surfaced in Koral, four each came from Tarlai, Tarnol and Bhara Kahu, two each from Alipur, Sohan and Rawat and one from Jhangi Syedan.

The tally of cases in the capital reached 3,495 during the current season, Dr Zia said, adding that 2,015 were reported from rural areas and 1,480 from urban localities.

During the last 24 hours, indoor residual spray was carried out in 684 houses while 97 fogging activities were conducted in different areas of the capital to eliminate the potential breeding sites of larvae, he said, adding that separate teams of the District Health Office also eliminated 962 potential breeding sites of larvae.

Rawalpindi

A total of 69 dengue patients landed in hospitals of the garrison city on Saturday, taking the tally to 2,404.

No death, however, has been reported in the three government-run hospitals in September and October.

On the other hand, closure of roads in the garrison city has largely affected the fumigation drive.

According to data of the Punjab government, 40 new patients came to Holy Family Hospital, 11 were admitted to Benazir Bhutto Hospital and 18 were under treatment in the District Headquarters Hospital.

As many as 171 patients are under treatment in the three hospitals - 98 in Holy Family Hospital, 21 in Benazir Bhutto Hospital and 52 in the District Headquarters Hospital.

As many as 58 patients recovered from the hospitals during the last 24 hours.
