Sindh teams named for Inter-provincial hockey

KARACHI: Mohammad Rohan and Huma Amani have been named to lead Sindh U-17 boys and U-16 girls in the Inter-Provincial Hockey Championships being held at Lahore from Nov 2 to 5. The teams were finalised after open trials held at the KHA Sports Complex and left for Lahore by train on Sunday.

Teams:

Boys U-17: Taimoor Sheikh, Mohammad Naeem, Vinay Sarwan, Mohammad Rohan (captain), Mohammad Adnan, Arbaz Ayaz (vice captain), Mohammad Israr, Saad Zaheer, Abdul Wahab, Sultan Mehmood, Zain Aneel, Khursheed Ahmed, Haris Sarwar, Waris Naseer, Meesum Abbas, Rehan-ur-Rehman, Gul Mehdi and Taqi Raza. Stand byes: Huzaifa Shahid, Amanullah, Mohammad Adnan, Abdul Hakeem, Syed Faisal Shah, Moiz Sajjad, Haider Ali and Mohammad Hussain. Karachi Gladiators, Youth Club Orange reach semis

KARACHI: Karachi Gladiators and Youth Club Orange made the last four of the Inter-Club Hockey Championship with contrasting victories at the KHA Sports Complex on Sunday.

Sibtain Raza struck four goals and Sharjeel Sheikh added two as Karachi Gladiators whipped Police Boys Club 6-1 to cruise into the semis. Mohammad Daniyal netted the lone goal for the losers.

Youth Club Orange, meanwhile, prevailed 3-2 in a penalty shootout against Beecham Club after a 2-2 stalemate in regulation time.

Goals from Ali Hasan and Abdul Wahab were cancelled out by Beecham’s Rizwan Khan and Irfan Khan before Youth Club Orange netted three of their five penalties while their opponents could only score two.

The remaining two quarter-finals will be played on Monday.—Sports Reporter

Former Australia all-rounder Philpott dies

MELBOURNE: Former Australia all-rounder Peter Philpott has died at the age of 86 following a long battle with illness, Cricket Australia said in a statement on Sunday.

A leg-spinner and middle-order batsman, Philpott played eight Tests for Australia in the mid-1960s, claiming 26 wickets at an average of 38.46. Former New South Wales captain Philpott made his Test debut in the 1964-65 series in the West Indies where he captured 18 wickets. Against England in a home Ashes series, he took 5-90 in the first innings of the first Test in 1965.

He went on to become a renowned coach after his playing days, mentoring the likes of New South Wales, South Australia, Yorkshire, Surrey, Manly, Mosman and Sri Lanka.

Philpott’s death comes at a difficult time for Australian cricket following the loss of greats like Alan Davidson and Ashley Mallett.—Reuters

LAHORE: Abdullah Adnan, Ahtesham Humayun and Abubakar Talha emerged as the winners in the Ali Embroidery Junior National Tennis Championship 2021 that concluded here at the PLTA Courts on Saturday.

National women’s volleyball

KARACHI: Sindh will play host to the national women’s volleyball championship which will commence at the KPT Sports Complex on Tuesday.

Teams belonging to 10 affiliated units of the Pakistan Volleyball Association who will compete in the event include defending champions Wapda, Army, HEC, Sindh, Punjab, Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan. The draws will be finalised in a team managers’ meeting at the venue on Monday.
