KARACHI: The Sindh chief minister appointed Prof Dr Gulshan Ali Memon as vice chancellor of Peoples University of Medical and Health Sciences for Women, Shaheed Benazirabad district on Monday.

According to a notification, Prof Memon will serve for four years. He has done his MBBS from Liaquat Medical College, FACS from American College of Surgery and FRCS from Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow, UK.

“We have no reservations on the academic credentials of Prof Memon. We only demand is that the search committee tasked with recommending names for the post of vice chancellor to the chief minister is revamped in a way that brings transparency in its affairs,” said Asif Husain Samoo, general secretary of Federation of All Pakistan Universities Academic Staff Association (Fapuasa)-Sindh chapter.

Sources said that Prof Memon was made acting vice chancellor at the university in 2019. He retired last year after which the government extended his tenure.

His appointment as acting vice chancellor at the university was twice challenged in court on different grounds before the chief minister made Prof Memon’s current regular appointment through the search committee.
