SWABI: Zahir Shah, a leading businessman and brother of Awami National Party leader Gul Zameen Shah, was shot dead allegedly by a local man before Friday prayers here, said DSP headquarters Nurul Amin Khan.

Swabi city police station SHO Ajab Durrani said that Zahir Shah, known as Haji Sahib in the region, had an exchange of hot words with one Javed Anwer alias Chanay and the latter had warned him of dire consequences.

Anwer allegedly opened fire with a pistol on Zahir Shah and killed him on the spot.

SHO Durrani said that the police raided various locations and finally finally nabbed the suspect near Naro Kallay area and also recovered a pistol from him.

Inayat Shah, son of the deceased, registered an FIR in Swabi city police station against the suspect, stating that the cause of the incident was exchange of hot words over a trivial issue.

Gul Zameen had contested elections twice from the provincial assembly constituency and his family was counted among the leading businessmen of the province.
