PLANTATION DRIVE

Published December 28, 2021

PLANTATION DRIVE: While the initiative to plant billions of trees is laudatory, there are certain issues that deserve due attention. In 2009, the Forest Department of Gilgit-Baltistan planted hundreds of plants along the Gilgit-Naltar road. Later, the number was increased to thousands. But with road expansion, these plants were chopped off and were never replaced by fresh saplings. The relevant authorities must look into the matter.

CONVOCATION WITHHELD: Having graduated more than a year ago, I have been waiting for the university management to consider the request of the students and hold convocation. It has nothing do with Covid, as the COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has a history of not holding convocations for one reason or the other. There are several other financial issues related to the award of degrees. The relevant authorities should take action to resolve such issues.

SCHOOL BUS SAFETY: A private school bus in Swat recently met an unfortunate accident that resulted in the death of three teenagers, and injuries to 26 others. Regrettably, most school and college buses and vans have no proper check-up, and most of them happen to be in a poor condition. The district administration must pay heed to this problem, and formulate some strategy to keep a proper check on school buses.

IMPACT OF PLASTIC: The use of plastic in our everyday life is massive, as most of the products we use are made up of plastic. There is no denying that plastic leaves an adverse impact on environment. The use of non-recyclable plastic is even more dangerous. To minimise this impact, many companies buy recyclable plastic items as trash and use them to manufacture other plastic materials. However, non-recyclable plastic is nothing but hazardous. The government should take effective measures and ban all non-recyclable plastic items.
