KARACHI: The Sindh police are going to induct more than 10,000 men and women with major chunk of recruitment from Karachi youth having city domicile in one of its massive recruitment drives announced after years, an official says.

The law-enforcement agency has allocated certain number of seats for every category ranging from disabled persons to people belonging from the transgender community and members of minorities.

They added that the Sindh police had announced 10,490 vacancies with 6,655 alone for Karachi Range.

The Sindh police were receiving applications from new recruits under different categories, who would be enrolled under the basic pay scale-5 (BPS-5) of the government employment structure.

Under the plan announced by the Sindh police for the Karachi police force, the law-enforcement agency would induct 6,655 youngsters as constables from all eight districts — South, West, Central, East, Keamari, Malir, City and Korangi — of its organisational structure in the metropolis.

Apart from regular appointments for eights districts, the police had also announced opening of categories of healthcare, drivers, mounted police, band staff and special force.

The major recruitment would come from the post of police constables of BPS-5 for Karachi range, the officer said.

“Among the total of 4,878 openings in this category from out of 6,655 recruitments for Karachi, the highest number of opportunities has been allocated for youngsters having Karachi Central domicile where a total of 1,104 police constables are required,” he said.

“Similarly, 770 would be recruited for District City, 635 for District East, 631 for District West, 478 for District Malir, 442 for District Korangi, 415 for District South and 330 police constables would get jobs for District Keamari of the police organisational structure. The rest would be adjusted later.”

The Sindh police, he added, had also sought applications for 1,777 drivers in Karachi police for all the eight districts who would also be awarded the BPS-5 category.

For the Sindh police, he said, there were also openings for 935 lady police constables.

A total of 2,900 police constables would be recruited for the special force of the Sindh police.

With an increase of over Rs6 billion, the Sindh government in June 2021 had allocated Rs119.97bn in the head of law and order in its budget for fiscal year 2021-22 compared to Rs113.87bn allocated in the last fiscal year.

While aiming at adopting modern and international practices like DNA tests in the province, procurement of transport and arms and ammunition, the budget also earmarked allocations for fresh recruitments.

When contacted, the city police officials confirmed that it was not only the first massive recruitment drive for Karachi after so many years, but it also a unique one because it had dedicated a certain number of opportunities for different segments of the society.

“It is for the first time that vacancies in such a bulk in various categories such as police hospital opportunities, and other categories have been announced for Sindh and Karachi police posts,” said Shazia Jehan, the Karachi police spokesperson.

“Similarly, this time there are different categories that have been identified like mounted police, band staff and special protection force for fresh recruits. Under a defined policy of the government, the police have decided to dedicate quotas for disabled persons, transgender community, members of minorities’ groups and women,” she added.
