I APPRECIATE the efforts of Employees’ Old-Age Benefits Institution (EOBI) chairman for resolving the issues faced by its pensioners, but I must also say in the same breath that there has been no improvement in the hardships of pensioners at EOBI offices across the country due to corruption and malpractice.

For instance, there are many pensioners belonging to the mining community whose pension cards have not been processed by the regional heads of EOBI since 2017. Besides, no reason has been cited by any official for keeping the pension cards unprocessed for the last so many years.

A large number of pensioners who have given their heart and soul to the economic and industrial development of the country along with their contribution to EOBI funds are being deprived of their legal right.

The acts of EOBI regional heads fall within the definition of misconduct, and they are not entitled to any leniency as their recklessness and corruption are depriving the mining workers of their legal right to receive pension. Such callous attitude should not be allowed to go unchecked and unpunished.
