PESHAWAR: Two policemen were martyred and one was injured when unidentified attackers opened fire on a checkpoint in Jalozai area of Nowshera district on Thursday, police said.

Nowshera district police officer Mohammad Omar Khan told Dawn that the policemen who came under attack were on mobile patrol in the area.

DPO Khan said that three armed men got out of a car and opened fire on the policemen with pistols when they signalled them to stop for checking. The attackers, the official said, sped away after opening fire on the policemen.

The firing left two policemen martyred while a third, the driver of the police mobile van, was injured in the attack.

Mr Khan said that the injured cop had been shifted to the Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. He said they were investigating the attack, adding it was not clear immediately whether it was an act of terrorism or had some other motive.

The martyred police officials were identified as assistant sub-inspector Fayyaz Khan and Sajjad Ali Shah. The injured driver was identified as Astaghfirullah. The funeral prayers of the martyred cops were offered at the Nowshera Police Lines.
