ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Commerce has proposed ‘Livestock Vision 2025’ aimed at transforming Pakistan’s livestock sector through private sector-led growth as a vibrant industry, well positioned to fully cater to local demands, claim a greater share in livestock exports, match international quality standards and achieve double-digit growth in the sector by 2025.

In its policy recommendations paper for ‘Pakistan’s Livestock Policy 2022’ made available on Sunday, the ministry says the Livestock Vision 2025 is aimed at creating a strong foundation in the next ten years, preparing the country to become a world leader in the livestock sector through private sector-led growth.

The policy paper proposed that the government should open trade of live animals and livestock products from the countries prohibited in the Import Policy Order of 2009 to cater to the domestic demand.

To increase competitiveness and export potential of Pakistan’s livestock products in the global market, it is essential that the Federal Food Safety, Animal and Plant Health Authority Bill may be converted into legislation at the earliest.

The paper suggested the commerce ministry should lobby the establishment and existence of disease-free zones within the country in the international markets.
