KARACHI: President Arif Alvi on Monday travelled on a Green Line bus with passengers for a brief journey from Numaish Chowrangi to Gurumandir, calling the service a first step from the federal government to modernise the transport system in Karachi.

President Alvi purchased the ticket from a counter at the Numaish station and got on the bus along with other passengers.

During brief interaction with the people onboard, he inquired about the quality of the service and sought their suggestions for improvement in the transport system of the city.

Later, talking to the media, he said it was good to see that Karachiites after many years were offered quality public transport service by the federal government.

Earlier, the president met the trustees and office-bearers of the Memon Medical Institute and appreciated their efforts for healthcare facilities through charity and fund raising.

He referred to the federal government’s Health Card scheme, describing it as a commendable initiative and added: “The people of Sindh would also benefit from the initiative of the federal government.”

Earlier in the day, President Alvi inaugurated a two-day symposium to promote awareness about cancer here at Karachi Institute of Radiotherapy and Nuclear Medicine (Kiran) in line with World Cancer Day.

He also inaugurated the newly installed cancer diagnosis and treatment facilities, including linear accelerator and PET/CT scanner at the Atomic Energy Cancer Hospital (AECH).
